So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

We say,
“Come Lord Jesus, Come”.
But we don’t really mean it.
We don’t really want you to come.
We don’t really want you to disrupt our plans.
We have a schedule to keep,
a plan to execute,
a check-list to complete.

We say,
“Come Lord Jesus, Come”
But we don’t really mean it.
We don’t really want to make room for you.
We don’t really want to welcome you in.
We want to observe the usual traditions,
attend the usual functions,
create our normal festive routines.

But,
what if we did mean it.
what if we did expect you to come.
what if we did open our hearts
and our homes.
What if we did expect to find you
in the unexpected places,
in the unlikeliest people,
in the unforeseen moments.

What if we made room,
in our schedules,
in our minds,
in our lives,
to lay down our desires
and expect to find you.

Come, Lord Jesus, Come.
We need you Lord,
to lighten our darkness,
to carry our burdens,
to unmask our fears,
to fill us with hope.
